I picked up The Conduit today. I've played through the first few areas so far (the game doesn't seem to have actual levels) and it looks to be pretty much everything they said it would be. All of the preview articles I've read have said that this is the best shooter game to come out for the Wii yet. So far, I'd have to say I agree with them. One of the best features is the ability to customize your experience. You can change what each remote button is mapped to; adjust the sensitivity of just about every controller motion and camera motion there is; switch between using the nunchuck or moving the wii remote to the edge of the screen to turn; pick from four difficulty settings (complete with funny names for each setting); as well as the usual adjustments of sound, brightness, etc.
It doesn't recommend using the Wii Zapper, but I've tried it with the Zapper and it seems to work well. It makes jumping a bit clumsy, but so far, I haven't had to jump much. I love the adjustible targeting system and the warnings that a new bad guy is in range. The weapon sound effects are fairly realistic for human weapons. A little vibration in the remote would make them feel even more substantial. Mele attack and grenade lobbing are pretty easy to do. I adjusted the sensitivity of the remote thrust and nunchuck lob moves and it seems to work well without thowing grenades when I didn't mean to.
The graphics aren't PS3 calibur, but they are quite impressive compared to other Wii games that have tried to have realistic graphics such as the Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms games. The environment isn't very distructible. Mostly just certain objects such as barrels and crates. The animations for the bad guys are pretty good though. The A.I. is dumb as a rock at first (probably even more so since I'm playing it on the easiest setting right now), but they get a little brighter as you progress. They even try to pull pincer moves on you. At one point, I had them zip lining down from the ceiling behind me. Thank goodness for the little beeps that warn me of their presence.
The plot reminds me a bit of a mish mash of Deus Ex, The X Files, 24 and National Treasure, but it's better than your typical shooter's lame excuse for a story so far. The voice of your character sounds like he's trying to play Dirty Harry or something. I'm waiting for him to say "Do you feel lucky punk? Well, do ya?" The guy who talks in your ear all the time sounds a bit like Donavan from the original Night Rider TV show. You also get bits of plot from over hearing radios spewing talk shows that are scattered about ala the radios and radio bots in Fallout 3. The music is standard epic movie stuff and not very memorable. The whole game, so far, reminds me a bit of a summer blockbuster popcorn movie, but that's ok because I like those kinds of movies.
How about you guys? Anyone else tried the game yet? If so, what do you think of the controls and of the game in general?
