I saw on ign.com that the guys who did Race to Witch Mountain are working on a movie based on Asteroids.  Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.  I love the game Astroids but if I'm not mistaken, there have been several movies made about destroying asteroids already.  Armageddon, and Space Cowboys come most readily to mind but I'm pretty sure there have been more.

I'd rather see a movie based on Defender or Descent if they want to do a movie based on a classic game featuring the hero flying around in a ship shooting stuff.  Descent, especially the later sequels like Descent II and FreeSpace actually had something of a plot to them complete with characters and some fairly witty dialog between missions.  Done right, the hero's sidekick Guide Bot in Maximum Descent could be a pretty funny and loveable character.  Defender could be a good movie a little along the lines of Independance Day only with hopefully less goofy bathroom level humor and more ship shooting action.  With todays special effects, they could make the alien landers picking up humans and then having the Defender swooping in, destroying the lander and then catching the tumbling human look really cool.  The aliens could be somewhat Borg-like in that they assimilate the captured humans into their tech to make faster, more agressive muntant fighter ships.  Though the Defender games have never had much in the way of a fleshed out plot, I could easily see a talented writer coming up with one that could make use of all the aspects of the game while still having a compelling human drama to keep those not impressed with aliens and cool ships interested.

What do you think?  Asteroids the Movie a good idea?  If so, what about it do you think could make it a good movie?  If not, what other classic games do you think might make a good basis for a movie?
